Bangladesh Spine Society (BSS) was founded in 3rd March 2008 as a collaborative organisation of spine surgeons and professionals with a primary interest in advancing excellence in spine patient care, research and education in our country. The early pathway was struggling. It started its journey with only 19 members who were determined to establish spine surgery as a specialised health service. Continued educational activities, research and exchange of knowledge and skills among spine surgeons had built up Bangladesh Spine Society as an icon of professional fraternity. As a recognition of that it became a government registered organisation in 2016.
To boost up research and academic activities we regularly arrange CME in different parts of the country in collaboration with different International Spine Societies as well as many eminent spine faculties. We annually organise International Spine Conference where many renowned national and foreign spine surgeons participate and exchange the knowledge and views of recent update in the management of spinal disorders. During COVID 19 pandemic we conducted many virtual webinars and educational meetings jointly with different International Spine Societies. Bangladesh Spine Society also introduced a Scientific Guideline for the spine surgeons to manage COVID patients those who are at great risk in hospital settings. By organizing different course programs and workshops regularly we are trying to create interest in Spine issues as well as augment knowledge and skill among the young spine surgeons. Now we are working for publishing an Official Journal of Bangladesh Spine Society as well as developing an official website.
Bangladesh Spine Society negotiated with the authority of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for fellowship in Spine surgery. The authority of BSMMU already introduced this fellowship in Spine surgery in Spine division of orthopaedic surgery department of BSMMU. Gradually this fellowship program will be started at NITOR and in different government tertiary level institutions to generate an efficient and competent spine surgeons’ community who will serve the nation in all aspects. We believe many obstacles and challenges that we are facing to flourish our activities and images will be eliminated by our whole hearted effort as a professional society. We are confident that we shall expand our horizon and explore new innovations in spine care.
